Bilbao, May 21, 2025 – Tottenham Hotspur have ended their 17-year trophy drought by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. The match was held at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
The only goal of the game came just before halftime. Brennan Johnson took advantage of a defensive mistake and managed to bundle the ball into the net, giving Spurs the lead.
Manchester United pushed hard in the second half, with several chances to equalize — including a dangerous shot from Luke Shaw in stoppage time — but Tottenham held firm. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made several key saves, and defender Micky van de Ven cleared a ball off the line to keep their lead intact.
This victory marks a major achievement for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who is in only his second season with the club. Despite a disappointing domestic campaign that saw Tottenham finish 17th in the Premier League, the team ended the season with a European trophy.
After the final whistle, the celebrations began. Club captain Son Heung-Min, who had just returned from injury, proudly lifted the trophy. There was a small hiccup during the medal ceremony, as not all players received medals due to a shortage — but that didn’t stop the joy.
For Manchester United, the defeat was a bitter one. Not only did they miss out on silverware, but they also failed to qualify for European football next season. It was also the fourth time they lost to Tottenham this season — a tough record to accept.
With this win, Tottenham automatically qualify for next season’s UEFA Europa League, and fans can finally dream again of a brighter future.
